  FCEP Professional Expectations

FLY CASTING EDUCATION PROGRAM (FCEP)
PROFESSIONAL EXPECTATIONS

All Fly Casting Education Program members are ambassadors of Fly Fishers International (FFI), the Fly Casting Education Program (FCEP) and the Casting Instructor Certification Program (CICP).

  1. Acknowledge the dignity of every person.
  2. Approach fellow instructors, FFI certified or not, with respect and humility and listen to their ideas and concerns. These are colleagues and potential members.
  3. Approach all professional contacts, especially students, with respect and equal treatment and without discrimination based on race, ethnicity, gender, age, or physical abilities.
  4. Carry or display CICP credentials when appropriate, such as outdoor and fly fishing shows and other large events.
  5. Place students’ needs above your own.
    • In most cases, refrain from unsolicited instruction.
    • Respect students’ personal space by avoiding physical contact. Ask permission to be close or have any physical contact when deemed necessary.
    • Prepare for casting lessons regardless of the number of students. Safety is always a priority.
    • Seek to understand the students’ goals, aspirations and limitations and provide a pathway to success. Be positive, patient and avoid harsh criticism.
    • Do not showcase your own skills except as necessary for demonstration and teaching.
  6. All Single and Two Hand Casting Instructors are expected to maintain proficiency in teaching and casting skills consistent with this level of certification by instructing, casting practice, and continuing education. There are opportunities for All Single and Two Hand Casting Instructors to bring their individual talents and energy to the FCEP by volunteering for some of its many teams. Advancement to Master level is encouraged.
  7. Besides teaching and maintaining fly casting at a high level of proficiency and knowledge, all Master level instructors are expected to lead the organization through mentoring candidates, participating in continuing education offerings, and participating in FCEP administrative duties - including becoming an examiner - when desired or asked.
