Fly Fishers International has been dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of fly fishing for more than 50 years. Education remains fundamental in our pursuit of our mission as we continue to introduce new anglers to the sport, create specialized learning opportunities, and ecourage our community members to share their skills and talents with other fly fishers around the world.
From seeing the delight of a young person casting a fly rod for the first time to sharing the unique history of fly tying with a Museum guest, education lies at the heart of all that FFI does and without your generous donations to our key programs, we cannot fulfill our mission.
The Education Committee awarded its first grant to The Mayfly Project. The Mayfly Project's standard program is to mentor a foster child through five sessions they call "stages", just like the life cycle of a Mayfly. As they progress through the stages, children learn line management, casting techniques, knot tying, entomology, river safety, mending tactics, hook setting, catch and release practices, and the value of conservation. This grant would not have been possible without your support.
Our Livingston, MT headquarters houses the FFI Museum, a place where historic fly fishing artifacts are preserved and displayed. Each year, thousands of vistitors come to the museum to learn about the sport's history and enjoy the display, which includes items from the early 19th century, including fly rods, fly wallets, float tubes, reels, and creels.
FFI's Education Committee will offer a new workshop at the Fly Fishing Expo to assist current and future leaders of FFI to gain insight into the organization. The workshop will be available online in fall/ winter of 2019-2020 for those who cannot attend in person. Topics include club and council management, operations and programs of FFI, and a roundtable discussion to address questions and concerns from participants.
A group of dedicated women has created FFI Women Connect - a community of women fly fishers that offers learning opportunities in a safe, non-intimidating environment. Women Connect offers a venue for female anglers to confidently develop fly fishing and tying skills while encouraging women to become leaders in FFI Clubs and the fly fishing industry.
The FFI Learning Center is an unprecedented collection of educational materials in areas of Fly Casting, Fly Tying, Fly Fishing Skills, and Conservation. We've reached many new anglers with materials created for the beginner fly fisher, and now it's time to turn our attention to the intermediate and advanced fly fisher.
"The author has done a great job putting this program together. It was very complete and informative and allowed me to have the confidence to be better prepared as an instructor. I would highly recommend this program as a guide to anyone wishing to instruct any of the many units when learning the many aspects of fly fishing."
