The Fly Tying Group will have much to share and participate in on all aspects of fly tying this year at the Fair. All members are invited to attend the annual meeting Wednesday, August 8 as well as the Rendezvous with great food and raffle of fly tying materials that afternoon. We have some great workshops that begin Tuesday with a beginner and intermediate Women’s Fly Tying workshops which take place a half day Tuesday, all day Wednesday and a half day on Thursday.
Some other offerings include tying wings on salmon flies, controlling thread, small flies, working with deer hair, tying feather wings on streamers, stillwater & saltwater flies, working with Peacock Herl and more.
You’ll be able to watch some of the best tiers in the world demonstrate their specialties during FishFest Thursday, Friday and Saturday. There will be a tying theater, a feature tier section and over 20 slots that will have a.m. and p.m. shifts. Be sure to drop by the FTG booth to visit about what we are doing to preserve the art form of fly tying for all fly fishers. Free with FishFest admission.
DEMONSTRATION FLY TYING BIOGRAPHIES (Coming Soon)
What is the IRON FLY TYING CONTEST you ask? It’s a live fly tying contest and its really quite simple, just tie a fly. Not a fly tier? Come and enjoy the fun. It’s an entertaining activity for all show attendees to watch. And for those brave enough to tie, the fun will begin when the clock starts. Simple? Maybe! But wait, let’s review…
Tiers will blindly draw materials from sealed envelopes. BLINDLY, just let that sink in for a minute. They type of the fly and time limit will also be drawn at random. Neither the host or the tiers will know what type of a fly they will be tying until they draw the packets. In addition, supplemental material will be chosen by reaching into a sealed box. Only 6 supplemental items can be chosen in any given tying session. All supplemental materials will be shared amongst all tiers. When the time is up, hands must be frozen at the fly. A half hitch may be added and thread trimmed.
In order to qualify, each of the materials supplied in the envelopes must be visible on the fly. Flies will be judged for originality, neatness & best use of materials.
There will be six preliminary rounds; three each day, Thursday and Friday. Then the winners from each preliminary round will tie off in a Semi-final round on Saturday. Finally, the top two winners will compete in the Grand Champion TIE-OFF.
The judging panel will consist 3 people selected each day. Members from the Fly Tying Group BOG will judge the final round.
So, if you think you can handle the pressure bring your cheering section and sign up to test your design and tying skills.
The Iron Fly contest is a really fun and fast paced event. The rules for the IRON FLY:
