Description:

Steve Hollensed and I want to invite you to the 2013 Instructors' School which again will be held at Fulton's Lodge on June 7-9, 2013. Those of you who have attended one these schools in the past know we keep attendance limited to 20 and attendance is limited to CI's and MCI's.

First, allow me to call your attention to a change.  Bill Gammel and I started the Instructor School back in 2006.  The idea for the school came from Bill’s and my desire to bring outstanding casting instructors to our immediate area.  Bill and I had both been extremely influenced and inspired by casting instructors that we had met at the FFF National Conclave.  We realized that many in our area simply could not or found it very difficult to attend the National Conclave and thought it would be great thing if we could bring instructors who we admired to our area.  The value, benefit and importance to students of casting being exposed to “high grade outside talent” was a concept of Al Kyte’s.  Bill and I came to appreciate that being exposed to outstanding instructors from  different geographic areas was of great benefit.

Well, Bill has pretty much retired and is now busy with duck hunting and is writing a book about duck hunting.  Also, Bill’s three young sons are taking a good bit of his time.  Steve has agreed to step into Bill’s spot in helping organizing bringing these schools to you.  As many of you may know Steve was elected to the Casting Board of Governors this year and is an Orvis Endorsed Guide specializing in striper fishing on Lake Texoma.  I will miss working with Bill but I look forward to working with Steve.

Now let’s talk about what is going to happen in 2013.   Our guest instructor for 2013 is Joe Libeu from Long Beach, California.  Joe is a long time member of the Casting Board of Governors, a member of the Long Beach Casting Club and a frequent competitor in ACA events.  I think it is fair to say that Joe is viewed by the members of the CBOG as one who has an unsurpassed knowledge of casting.

For the last several years Joe has co-chaired the MCI test committee.  A few years ago Joe gave a workshop for Governors and MCI’s on the changes in the MCI performance test.  I think Steve would agree that Joe’s workshop was one of the most informative that has been presented in some time.  Allow me to simply say Joe’s workshop made me a better examiner and I certainly picked up several tips on how to effectively perform many of the MCI tasks.

Joe will present a thorough review of the MCI performance test.  If you are a CI and want to receive some keen insight into the MCI performance test this will be a rare opportunity to receive some excellent advice from someone who has a unique knowledge of the performance test.    If you are an MCI this will be an equally rare opportunity to gain insights that will make you a better examiner.  And if you simply want to improve your casting this will be an opportunity to receive assistance from someone who is a highly respected member of the Long Beach Casting Club.

I think I would be remiss if I did not mention that Joe will cover how the Long Beach Casting Club prepares candidates.  Also, something I am looking forward to is Joe’s ideas about how to improve your accuracy casting---as well as his ideas on practice tips.

    The schedule.
As in the past, the school will officially begin on Friday (June 7) at 4:00 PM with an informal socializing with soft drinks and beer provided.  We our going to follow what we did at the last school with everyone bringing their own food for the Friday and Saturday evening cookouts.  Grills, charcoal, paper plates, cups, baked beans, cole slaw, chips etc. will be supplied by the school.  We want the Friday and Saturday evening meals to be something akin to "potluck" with the sharing of a favorite dish.  We will gear toward ending our Friday night meal at around 7:00.

After our Friday evening meal we are going to have some casting until dark and then Joe will be go over how he and other members of the Long Beach Casting Club prepare candidates for the CI and MCI tests along with Joe’s tips on practice.  This will be a prime time to pose questions about MCI performance tasks.

We will resume on Saturday morning at 8:00 AM with Joe’s thorough review of the MCI test, which will include tips on preparation, what is and is not acceptable, and practice tips.  We will break for lunch at 12:00 which will be provided by the school.

I want to emphasize attendees will be doing a good deal of casting—this is not going to be a “passive” workshop where you are going to be listening to lecture— there will be a good deal of participation by those attending.  It is anticipated that about three months before the all attendees will be assigned certain MCI tasks to be performed for demonstration purposes.  This will give you an opportunity to be well prepared to perform the assigned tasks.

We will resume the afternoon session at 1:00 with additional instruction on MCI test tasks and selected tasks from the CI test (especially the task 7).   If time allows we will have  special casting challenge sessionsThese special challenge sessions involve ----- well, on second thought these sessions will be a surprise, but I guarantee you will find them interesting and they will help improve your casting.

We will break approximately 5:00 for our evening meal.   I suspicion that there will be quite a bit of casting after our evening meal and an opportunity to receive a number of tips that will help move your casting to the next level.

Sunday breakfast will be provided by the school and from 8:00 until 12:00 there will be "special instruction" which will be driven by what you would like to have covered.  This may include videoing of your casting for a more in depth understanding of your casting.

What you need to bring.  We may spend some time  "on the water" so bring appropriate wading gear, your favorite single handed rod (if you have an interest in two handed casting it would be a good idea to bring your favorite two handed rod as well) eye protection, hat, sun screen  and food for your Friday and Saturday evening meal.
Fulton's Lodge.  If you have spent time at Dale Fulton's Lodge you know what to expect.  If you have not, this is a small Lodge on the White River close to Wildcat Shoals.  If the water is low we may do some exercises on the water.

The Lodge has two 2 bedroom units, four 1 bedroom units and one sleeping room.  The two bedroom units can hold 6 and the one bedroom units can hold 3.  The bedroom units have kitchens while the sleeping room does not.

I have spent considerable time at Dale's Lodge and it is neat, clean and in a very relaxing setting.  If you place a high value on luxury or think a private room is a must then this school is probably not for you.

The Cost.   Steve and I want this to be a quality learning experience and we are committed to bringing you some of the best instructors we know.

The fee for the 2013 school is $350.00 and this includes two nights stay at the lodge, continental breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, lunch on Saturday and complimentary soft drinks and beer on arrival.  To reserve your space, please contact me and I will hold a space for you for ten days to allow you time to send a $200.00 deposit.  The balance of the fee must be received by May 1, 2013.  Deposits will be refunded upon notification received prior to April 30, 2013.  After April 30 it will not be possible to refund a deposit unless your slot in the school can be filled from the waiting list.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Chuck Easterling
